Panel: Love Local Government
PANEL DISCUSSION: LOVE LOCAL GOVERNMENT
June 23 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM via Zoom.
We need local government and its work now more than ever. The pandemic revealed deepening inequalities across the UK and made vulnerable people even more vulnerable. Now the deepening cost of living crisis is increasing the strains on council services to provide support for people who are living on the edge. The government has set an agenda of levelling up that depends on a dynamic local response. But councils have experienced on average a real term cut in core funding of 50 percent since 2011 and council workers who have been working around the clock to respond to the latest challenges have had a real-terms cut in pay over the last ten years.
How can we restore trust between local and central government? How can we foster closer relationships between local government and the people it most needs to serve and work with? How do we build council teams that can lead the way in levelling up, providing the services and regeneration that people need, and recruit the best and brightest to these jobs?
Please come to a panel discussion co-hosted by Heather Jameson, editor Municipal Journal, and Chris Twigg, co-founder Inner Circle Consulting, to help map the road to a local government revival.
